Broken Together

The day was just dawning. The fresh air from the windows and fragrance of flowers across the road would have given a great start to even the dullest of the souls in the city. But not to him., Especially after the chaos in his life … both Personal and professional…

Arjun., an aspiring entrepreneur and a software professional was sitting in his bed., Just awake from his worst nightmare. Is it a nightmare or a memory? He would say both.

It has become a part of his routine to wake up to this dream. A dream, only where he could ever see her again… He felt his heart beating fast as his mind rewinded all those good old days.

All his memory with her are exceptionally beautiful. He always wanted her by his side., through all the highs and lows of his life.

They were friends since primary school days. With their parents working in prestigious central government company, they lived in the same township., They were fond of each other as they grew up and they always knew that’s not just a friendly bond they share. As time flew, they were in a committed relationship.

It is always a difficult task for him to recollect the day he proposed her. However long he may try, he would never recall it., Because A thing like that has never really happened in their lives. It was not a poetic or a dramatic love as shown in the movies or stories. Both of them always knew it in their hearts. A relationship decided by the destiny. Was it truly decided by destiny ? Or was it a mere illusion? Only destiny could answer.

He was thinking about the day when he announced his decision of leaving his job and moving abroad to startup a new company with his friend and the heated argument that followed., and the words that cut their hearts and wounded the relationship forever…

All he could do now is to wish that nothing happened on that day. He just wanted to erase that day from his life. The days of blaming each other and finding reasons are far gone. Now he wanted her the most. More than ever in his life.

As he sat alone, contemplating his decisions and words that costed him the future and love of his life., she was all getting dressed up in red silk, as soft as her skin and bedecked with golden jewels which failed to match her skin tone. Yes. Today’s the day she is getting married.

He doesn’t have the courage to face the reality. Although he wanted to go and see her for one last time, he could not muster the courage to even get out of the bed on her wedding day. Seeing her with someone else in the wedding dias would haunt him forever. More worse than his dream of their last meeting. No. He decided that he will not tamper his beautiful memories of her. He tried to remove even the thought of her getting married to someone else. He paid no attention to time or the surroundings.

He kept staring at the blank wall.., even ignoring the calls from his mom for breakfast.

He was brought back to the senses after what seemed like eons of silence by a message tone from his mobile. A tone he specifically set for her number. A tone which didn’t ring for a long time, since their last meeting. He was excited, happy yet scared to open the text. He checked the time. He knew the marriage would have been completed by now. After much thoughts and hesitation he opened the message. The text read, “It should have been you.!”.
